I love the verse about how, God remembers we were devoted in our youth(sorry can't remember the exact Scripture.) I hope that is true for me in a few years, since I am still a youth I can't say that yet!
When God led His people out of Egypt(Book of Exodus speaks about this,) He didn't lead them to a run-down land, He lead them to a land where all their needs were met. A land where honey was overflowing ( Exodus 3:8.)
When we turn away from God, we turn to things that we think are, "better," but as it turns out the thing turns out to blow up in our faces. We look to broken things to fix our brokenness. God is the ONLY one who can heal us. He is the only one who we can truly trust. So, why not ever look away from the Creator of Heaven and Earth?
I think God doesn't make bad things happen to you, and if He does it's to bring you closer to Him. But we do know that all things work together for good to those who love God. Romans 8:28. If you are faced with a problem, it may be a consequence of your choice.
